Guest Mixer - Tristan DeDe [future loves past]

Live Music: It's a Livin' Thing

My name's Tristan and I play in a Tempe, AZ based band called Future Loves Past. (http://futurelovespast.bandcamp.com)

I have seen a lot of live music, and I have lost my mind at a lot of shows for different reasons. Here are a few of them that stood out over the years.

1. Best Show: All around insanity goes to...

The Flaming Lips
Version:1.0 StartHTML:0000000105 EndHTML:0000002686 StartFragment:0000002513 EndFragment:0000002650

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8lGAmmRu3Xg

Being at a Lips show and allowing the band full control is like nothing else on the planet.

2. Highest Energy: Surprise attack, in your face, goes to...

Man Man
Version:1.0 StartHTML:0000000105 EndHTML:0000002768 StartFragment:0000002513 EndFragment:0000002732 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WJ5I_EP6Iw

These guys have such an interesting stage presence and sound. I can only describe it as acid/pirate rock/Tom Waits/Bohemia/Punk. Insanity.

3. Hardest Rockin': Most noise (in a good way) goes to...

The Black Keys
Version:1.0 StartHTML:0000000105 EndHTML:0000002768 StartFragment:0000002513 EndFragment:0000002732 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVyPBiD2rAg

Although this is a Jerry Butler cover by the Keys that I've been obsessed with, their live show kills. More sound coming out of two guys than I've ever seen.

4. Most Psychedelic: The atmosphere in the crowd alone blows minds. Goes to...

The String Cheese Incident
Version:1.0 StartHTML:0000000105 EndHTML:0000002768 StartFragment:0000002513 EndFragment:0000002732 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9IIrjJ8GxY

Great Talking Heads cover, this is actually one of the shows I was at. Being in the middle of the crowd at a SCI show is like being in the Mos Eisley cantina in Star Wars, with less clothing and more glow sticks.

5. Best One-Man-Band: "Who needs 'em" Goes to...

That 1 Guy
Version:1.0 StartHTML:0000000105 EndHTML:0000002768 StartFragment:0000002513 EndFragment:0000002732 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcmrYhDq9ms

Apparently it took this man 13 years to design and build his magic tubes, and then another 13 years to Master it.

6. Hidden Treasure: Wait, who? Goes to...

Heypenny
Version:1.0 StartHTML:0000000105 EndHTML:0000002768 StartFragment:0000002513 EndFragment:0000002732 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHmSfHY_-Zo

We stumbled upon this Nashville band at Bonnaroo, drawn in by the amazing sound coming out of the little tent they were playing at. Great vibe, amazing songs, and super upbeat.

7. Best "Heard of 'em, but..." band: The Name's Everywhere but Apparently I'm not, goes to...

Local Natives
Version:1.0 StartHTML:0000000105 EndHTML:0000002768 StartFragment:0000002513 EndFragment:0000002732 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8pZkZguPAPs

I'd heard this band was great from a number of friends, and it was the best show I've gone to on a whim. Also at Bonnaroo.

8. Most Funtime Goodtime Award: They'll Never Let You Down, goes to...

Igor and the Red Elvises
Version:1.0 StartHTML:0000000105 EndHTML:0000002768 StartFragment:0000002513 EndFragment:0000002732 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HV_n_GBKRtI

"Hello everybody, we're your favorite band the Red Elvises" These guys have the best party vibe of any band I've seen. Amazing crowd interaction and pretty catchy tunes.

9. Biggest Letdown on CD: Too Good Live I Guess. Goes to...

Phosphorescent
Version:1.0 StartHTML:0000000105 EndHTML:0000002768 StartFragment:0000002513 EndFragment:0000002732 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IoTTbQifskc

I was blown away by these guys when I saw them at Prospect Park in Brooklyn, but their CD was a bummer.

10. Jam Band with Style: Jam can be Pop too. Goes to...

Tea Leaf Green
Version:1.0 StartHTML:0000000105 EndHTML:0000002768 StartFragment:0000002513 EndFragment:0000002732 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_1ujpKi-Lc

Another surprise attack, this band is like The Beatles and Pink Floyd merge with the Dead, and then Phish eats that freak child.

11. Classic Rock Revival: Dig? Goes to...

Dr. Dog
Version:1.0 StartHTML:0000000105 EndHTML:0000002768 StartFragment:0000002513 EndFragment:0000002732 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czbB4UasTCY

I closed my eyes during this song and I swear I was listening to an undiscovered Beach Boys recording from another dimension.

12. Religious Experience: Who Needs Church? Goes to...

Paul McCartney
Version:1.0 StartHTML:0000000105 EndHTML:0000002768 StartFragment:0000002513 EndFragment:0000002732 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1c5pgo6zU10

He played this song live, and apparently it was the only time it's ever been played live on US soil. If you close your eyes, many times, it's as if all four of them are there. Brings a tear to the eye.

AND Last but not least...

13. Most Gimmicky: No Holds Barred, Hands Down, Goes to...

Bruce Springsteen
Version:1.0 StartHTML:0000000105 EndHTML:0000002768 StartFragment:0000002513 EndFragment:0000002732 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EeJ1ldwXQdk

I wish the intro to this video were online, but this was the Bonnaroo show I was at. He asked the crowd to pull out all their posters, and picked one at "random." It was a large cardboard cutout of Santa Claus that someone brought. He brought it up on stage and started screaming, "It's too f@ckin' hot for Santa!!!" over and over, and then the E Streeters busted into the most polished version of this song I've ever heard. It was some goofy Sh#t, in the middle of the summer. Great Job Boss!

Thanks!
