Mix for a Dusk Bus Ride into the City - DMcT

I know, I know... it's sort of a specific, sappy name, right? I'd like to think of it as conveying a very specific emotion. Anyone who grew up a drive from New York and has spent any considerable amount of time on a bus going back and forth knows what I'm referring to.

Daytime bus rides are one thing, but when it just starts to get dark and the lights just start to come on in the buildings, everything appears quite differently than it did earlier. All of the songs on this mix fit this aesthetic: there's something that's both sprawling and intimate about each. They are personal, perhaps abstract at times... some are fast, others slow. In short, they don't necessarily all sound alike. But what they DO sound like is that you should be listening to them looking at the window at an approaching city.

So, here they are:
1.) Carolina - Ben Gibbard
2.) Signal Flare - The Northern
3.) So Far Around the Bend - The National
4.) Where the Streets Have No Name - U2
5.) Someday My Prince Will Come - Miles Davis
6.) Wooden Ships - Crosby, Stills, & Nash
7.) As Far As I Can See - Phantogram
8.) (When We Are Dancin') I Get Ideas - Louis Armstrong
9.) Stay in the Shade - Jose Gonzalez
10.) Michael and Heather at the Baggage Claim - Fountains of Wayne
11.) Adventures in Solitude - The New Pornographers
12.) Gravity - Sara Bareilles

  1. i love this mix. i for one have never been to new york, but just given the description, I can imagine the ride. Its a place we've all been before--that place between here and there--when the songs stop playing background music and become more of a soundtrack for the drive. With just a song we're taken beyond our destination. It might open our eyes to the world in front of us or merely send us daydreaming. The mood is not always the same, but the aesthetic is beautiful in that it's always right for the moment.

...at least that's what I took from the songs. I LOVE adventures in solitude. Props on the miles davis and louis armstrong. nice touch with the sara bareilles. i used to be a hater, but that song is..."just delightful."
